Hey All!
So sorry for not posting this week! I needed a little bloggy break to rest and feel good again! I'm not sure when I will be back to posting (hopefully next week). But don't worry, I will be back! All this pregnancy sickness is really making me focus on rest and rejuvenation! I'm sure I will be back and better then ever shortly. For now, you can read a special guest post I did for the lovely Lori and Michelle of Pure2Raw: http://www.pure2raw.com/2010/04/tips-on-how-to-handle-crohns-disease/
I was so honored when they asked me to write it a few months back! Enjoy! XO
Hey All! Happy Friday!! Again, sorry for the lack of posts, I am sure I will be posting again more often as soon as this sickness passes. The baby is doing great, I saw my "high-risk" doctor yesterday. Why am I seeing a "high-risk" doctor? Well, my main OB isn't trained to deal with illnesses and pregnancy, but this doctor knows all about Crohn's and handling it during pregnancy. She is the kindest lady in the world and wanted to know all about being a vegan. She said I knew more then she did about nutrition...duh..lol! She suggested I get more electrolytes, and Gatorade (YUCK), so I told her about coconut water and she loved it! The baby's heart rate was 166 BPM! Hooray! How rockin' is that? My family is saying it's a girl because a heart rate above 140 is said to be (according to wives tales). Any gender guesses? Most of T's family is saying boy, his dad says girl because he says my face looks different..okay..haha!
Anyway, last week I made this yummy juice, which would probably make me gag now: red cabbage and pear. Lots of pear.. cabbage is really strong! So pretty too!
Also, the people at Blue Mountain Organics send me some Better Than Roasted "Totally Nutz" 100% organic mixture of cashews, walnuts, pecans and almonds.
Really good nuts! Ha ha! I found they had a different taste to them, at first they tasted smoked, then really sweet. I read the back and found out that since they are raw and sprouted that they have a distinct taste. They weren't kidding, really flavorful! YUM!
Since most of my week has been on the couch, T came home from work with 2 surprises! Jenny McCarthy's book: Baby Laughs (sorry about this picture, I didn't realize there was a glare). Just what I needed, some light humorous reading. This book cracks me up!
He also brought me a mini-raw vegan strawberry/lime cheesecake! YUM!!! I could only eat half and a lot of the filling. While I normally enjoy the crust, it was a little heavy for my poor queasy stomach. I still have it in the fridge, might have to break it out again later on!
Have a great weekend everyone!
Hey Everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! Thanks again for all the well wishes and love! I am still feeling sick, but I am so incredibly happy to have life growing inside of me! It's unreal how happy I feel inside!! T and I spent most of our weekend inside on the couch (good thing we were having crappy weather). I will be happy when this passes. But I'm just ridding with it now, knowing it's what's best for the baby.
Anyway, remember a few weeks back when I told you all about The Nuts Online contest and asked you to vote for "Team Raw?" Well, "Team Raw" won and so did someone who entered my blog as their referring site! Let me know if it was you! I am curious to find out who it was. The winner won a box of raw samples and they also sent another one to me, along with one thing I could choose from the site. I choice their sprouted grain raw cereal. Here it is below with some homemade almond milk. Yum!
I also managed to get down a smoothie at one point before the weekend: Bananas, Sunwarrior, Spirulina, Almond Milk and DHA oil. Someone had asked which DHA I am using.. I use Udo's vegan DHA oil. My Whole Foods doesn't have a wide variety of vegan DHA's, so if you want to suggest a better one, I am all ears!
On Saturday night, my sister had invited us to go to dinner at Candle 79 for her birthday. I wasn't feeling too good, but we made the trip in. I ordered the Guacamole Timbale: chipotle black beans, caramelized onions, cucumber-tomato salsa, tortilla chips, ranchero sauce. Under normal circumstances I am sure I would of loved this. But, since I wasn't feeling to good, it was a bit rich. I gave a lot to my sister.
For dinner I ordered The Mediterranean Tempeh Cake: truffled new potatoes, seasonal vegetables, preserved lemon, artichoke & olive salad. This was really good! Olives and artichokes are two of my favorite thing, so that made for a yummy (filling) meal. We were all really full after eating. But we still ordered a Mexican chocolate brownie: caramelized banana, coconut ice cream, toasted pecans, chocolate-ancho sauce. I am not a big brownie person, so I only had a few bites and ate the coconut ice cream on top.
Even though I wasn't feeling good, we still had a fun time and hope to do it again with my sister and her boyfriend soon. Have a great day everyone!
Thank you all so much for the congrats, kind comments, love and suggestions!!! Many of you suggested Kristen Suzanne from KristensRaw.com, believe me, I have been emailing that women like crazy!! She has been such a big help (she was one of the first to know I was pregnant because of my questions!). Thank you Kristen! Mwah! Anyway, This all day sickness has knocked me off of my feet. I've been sleeping for hours on the couch just to feel good. Food definitely helps, but nothing sounds good! I am so ecstatic and over the moon happy to have a baby growing inside of me. I can't stop looking at the picture of the sonogram. The little heartbeat was the cutest thing ever!!! T and I were calling it a sesame seed a few weeks ago, now we call it our little flicker, because the heartbeat flicked so sweetly.
Anyway, a few weeks back, the people at Kaia Foods were kind enough to send me a whole bunch of goodies to sample! Let me start by saying, nothing is left!! :) Everything was amazing! I love this company: from there site: "Kaia Foods was founded with the belief that our health is best supported by eating an abundance of minimally processed whole foods. We sprout, mix and dehydrate our organic foods at low temperatures so that they remain 'raw.' No baking, frying, bleaching, or weird processing steps!"
Here is what they sent (everything is raw and vegan):
- Kale Chips: 2 different flavors: Barbecue and Salt and Vinegar. I really can not decide which one I like better. They were both the perfect substitute for potato chips. I hope to see these in the store soon, because I would love to snack on them more often! I know it's east to make your own kale chips, but mine are always soggy the next day (if they even make it that long!). So these snack size bags are perfect for travel or to throw in your purse and grab when you are hungry.
- Fruit Leather: 2 different flavors: Spiced Apple and Vanilla Pear. I preferred the Vanilla Pear over the Spiced Apple. But, I found them both to be delicious, like a fruit roll up but better.
- Buckwheat Granola: Cocoa Bliss: Holy yum! This is the best chocolate flavored rawnola I've had! Mmmm!!! I love how my almond milk was all chocolaty afterward! This had a strong chocolate flavor and chunks of chocolate that reminded me of Oreos!
- Sprouted Sunflower Seeds: 2 flavors: Teriyaki and Sweet Curry: These were my favorite!! I could not resist handfuls at a time of these!!! The flavor was so strong and they were such a tasty snack! When I see these at the store, you can guarantee I am going to grab some! I was impressed with how filled the bag was too. These didn't last long, because, wow, I was impressed!
Over all, I would say the products from Kaia Foods were quality and well worth it. I love how generous they are check this out: "As part of our mission to improve quality of life through proper nutrition we invest 1% of sales in fighting hunger. We currently donate to The Hunger Project and to the United Nations World Food Program."
I hope to see more of there stuff in my Whole Foods soon. For now, I will just have the memory! ;)
And I can't take it anymore!!! I am pregnant!!!!!!! We saw the heartbeat today, so I feel comfortable telling my friends now!!! :) Yes, I've known since March and have been pregnant since the end of February. Man, was this a hard secret to keep!! In fact, some of you know, because of questioning me or guessing and what can I say? I can not tell a lie! HA HA!
That's our little baby.. still so small, but the heart was strong and so cute, flickering away! I've been dealing with all day nausea, ALL DAY (and night, I wake up in my sleep and stand over the potty waiting..). So far, no puke. Hopefully, that doesn't happen (both my mother and grandmother never threw up, just nausea). Anyway, eating has been HARD! I am not hungry for anything, and when I don't eat I feel more sick. So if I miss a post here and there it's because I have nothing good to post! Also, I'm having trouble even looking at food blogs. Or being on the computer (the couch is my new favorite place). Sorry if I don't comment, please come say "Hi" here though! Although, surprisingly, green juice has been easy to get down! Anyway, our due date is around November 26th or 27th! Yay!!!! Thanks everyone for all the baby dust and prayers, it happened a lot faster then we expected (hello, a week after we got the okay from the doc!). All you mamas out there, please tell me what to eat!! Salads and raw veggies are not an option right now (although, FRUIT, nuts, Lara Bars, and other raw snacks have been fine). Love you all! XOXO!
Happy Monday! I had a nice peaceful weekend, filled with relaxing and fun. But before that, I made Gena's: Fennel, Cabbage and Carrot Slaw with Poppyseed Dressing. Only I didn't have fennel or carrots, so I used purple cabbage and green cabbage and for the dressing I used cashews in place of pine nuts. Totally yummy! I love eating this slaw the next day too! Mmm! I had a Sunshine Burger with avocado and Bubbies Pickles and Sauerkraut on top!
This was a green smoothie I made over the weekend: Cilantro, Pineapple, Mango, Vanilla Sunwarrior Protein, Bananas, Maca, vegan DHA oil, Chia and Flaxseeds.
I also made "Vegan, Gluten free, Daiya Eggplant Parm", I made it the same way you would make regular Eggplant Parmesan, but instead of dipping the eggplant in eggs, I dipped them in olive oil and gluten free vegan bread crumbs. In place of the cheese I used Daiya. This was a yummy comfort meal. I like to make this one in a blue moon, but usually with no cheese at all. Daiya has changed that!
Yesterday, T and I went to NYC for the day. We walked around little Italy (T wanted pizza) and then went over to Chelsea Market to walk around. They have a ton of cute little bakeshops, cafes and other stores in there. It's kind like a mini mall. Best of all, they have a One Lucky Duck (Pure Food & Wine's Takeaway place)!!! I got a falafel salad (my favorite). I've ordered this in the past, and mentioned how their falafel is better then any cooked falafel I've ever had! I'm a huge fan!
I also took a Mallomar to go! I was hoping for a Moonpie, but they didn't have any. Although, any dessert they make is out of this world, you really can not go wrong! By the way, have you seen the awesome contest going on by Heathy of Sweetly Raw! Make your own Moonpie! I wish I was as talented as these folks!
Mmm, so rich and creamy! Perfect end to a weekend! I hope you all had a great one! Any plans for the week? I have some little things going, nothing too exciting. But, yay for nice weather!! Have a great day! XO
Happy Wednesday! What a beautiful week it has been.. so far. Later on in the week is suppose to bring rain and cooler weather. Today we are having temperatures in the 80's! By the end of the week it will be back to the lower 60's! Oh well, I'll take it over snow!
Last week for dinner one night I made cauliflower, chickpeas, carrots, onion and cilantro all in one pan and throw some brown rice and lots of curry powder in. This was one of those "empty out the fridge" meals that turned out great!
This juice was amazing: Clementines and Romaine! I think I will make it again today!
Yay for veggie burger season!!! You all know how much I love Sunshine Burgers! My favorite this year is the Barbecue flavor. Last year, I was hooked on the Garden Herb. Funny how that happens. Anyway, I had it on a romaine leaf with stone ground mustard, avocado and Bubbies raw sauerkraut and pickles. On the side I made sweet potato and regular potato fries baked in the oven.
Over the weekend, we worked a lot in our yard. I even bought a few new additions. Last year (all of my garden blogs from last year), was our first Spring/Summer in our house and I had fun with the lawn ornaments. This year was no different, I added this cute little mouse saying "Be Happy!" to our yard.
And this cute butterfly on a stick! Along with the flowers we planted behind it.
We also planted our first row in the garden!!! Last year, our garden grew out of control!! In a good way, of course! I hope we have the same luck this year. So far we only planted kale. Since that can be planted early.
So, do you plan on having a garden this year?? We usually have our garden and a few pots with different herbs too! I am so excited to get planting! Have a lovely day everyone!
Hey All! Happy belated East/Passover/Weekend! I hope you all had a great one! For Easter we went to Candle 79 with my mother in law and little brother in law. My other brother in law and his fiance were on a cruise and my in laws are now divorced so my father in law went his own way. But, we had a lovely time. We walked through Central Park (A LOT!), and then had a lovely lunch/early dinner at Candle 79. I ordered a delicious special salad they had: Spinach, Roasted Artichoke Hearts, Pickled Onions, Olives and a Lemon dressing. Delicious!
Sorry for the blurry pictures, I wanted to take them quick so my mother in law didn't think I was crazy! ;) For my entree I ordered the tempeh (my favorite dish to get at Candle). This time it was over green beans, a sweet potato puree and cocoa mole sauce. On top was a roasted pepper, sliced almonds and I think dill? Anyway, it was awesome! The only time I have tempeh is when I am at a restaurant, and most of the time that is Candle 79! So good!
For dessert, I went raw! I ordered the cherry and pineapple raw parfait. Underneath was raw granola and on top was a cherry sorbet and pineapple ring and pineapple sauce. YUM!!!! This was so refreshing and hit the spot! You can see through the ring, my mother in law ordered the Peanut Butter Bliss! :)
My mother in law was also kind enough to bring us some Easter gifts! Two raw chocolate bunnies from One Lucky Duck!
How cute is this? And very yummy too! I broke off the ears and ate them last night! :)
She also brought me this book by Dr. Oz: You: Having a Baby. This looks great, I already thumbed through it.
Today is my lovey, Ginger's Birthday!! She is 4 years old!!! Check out this post from last year on her birthday! Have a great week everyone! Love, love, love!
