Attempts at More Protein

*****UPDATED WITH THE EMAIL BACK FROM LARABAR*****

Happy Friday!

I forgot to give you all an update on the Larabar situation. In one of my posts earlier this week, I had mentioned that some of the new flavors from Larabar had "May contain milk" printed on the label. I am assuming this is because they use chocolate chips (but why couldn't they use vegan chocolate chips?). Anyway, General Mills bought Larabar in 2008, and for that reason, this doesn't surprise me. I did send an email to the company with my concerns and I will post their reply when/if they get back to me.

***I just got an email from Larabar, here is their response:

Thank you for contacting Larabar concerning the ingredients in our products. As manufacturers and consumers, we understand your concern about potential allergens in the foods you eat. Our primary goal is to provide accurate information, and we believe this is best accomplished by referring to the specific ingredients listed on each product package. This is the most current information for your needs.

The chocolate chips we buy are produced on equipment that also processes chocolate with milk and soy ingredients. Neither we nor our ingredient supplier can assure that there is no cross contact with milk or soy ingredients in the chocolate chips. We will continue to look for a solution that will allow us to keep dairy/soy free and vegan claims on the package.

Our products are labeled for the top 8 allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, dairy products, eggs, soy, wheat, crustaceans, and fish) plus sesame, sunflower and mollusks. We label for these allergens using CONTAINS and/or MAY CONTAIN lists located directly below the product’s ingredient list.

CONTAINS means that the allergen(s) is included in the product’s recipe. The allergen(s) will be listed in the ingredient list, and also in the CONTAINS statement just below the ingredient list.

MAY CONTAIN means that the allergen(s) is not in the product’s recipe but could be present as result of the manufacturing process regardless of our best efforts to exclude it. These allergens will not be included in the ingredient list.

Both CONTAINS and MAY CONTAIN mean that if you are sensitive to the specific allergen(s) in the list, no matter which way it is listed, you should avoid this product.

This ingredient and allergen information is for the package in hand. It is not intended for other packages of the same product. Ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation. If you have allergy concerns, please carefully read the ingredient information on each package.

We hope this information helps you. You may also want to contact the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) at 1-800-929-4040, or visit their web site at www.foodallergy.org. Although they cannot provide specific ingredient information regarding a particular product, they are a good resource to help in the management of your allergies and sensitivities.

We appreciate your interest. Please contact us again with any further questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Pat Frances

Hmm, thoughts? This sounds better, but I still don't like it. I might actually eat the newer bars now (or at least try them) because the risk of contamination is very small and since I am not allergic to dairy, I don't have to worry.

Anyway, I haven't posted any nursery updates because T and his father are still working on the same thing, so no changes. But, I promise I'll post a picture when we've made more progress. :)

Oh and P.S. We are keeping the baby's name a secret until she is born! ;)

Anyway, the weather has been a little better here. Still in the 80's but at least we are getting a tiny break from the humidity. In an attempt to get some Vitamin D, Ginger and I sat in the yard for a little. I love watching her explore, she smells every flower we have, it's really sweet. She found my ever growing lavender and was really digging the scent!
I've been trying to get some more protein, since it's vital right now in my pregnancy. One of my favorite snacks right now is celery with raw almond butter and raisins, AKA: Ants on a Log. I am getting mommy practice too!
I also made some tempeh as a side dish to a big kale salad I made for dinner the other night. As many of you know, I don't have soy often, and when I do, I prefer tempeh since it is fermented and doesn't bother my stomach. I sauteed it with olive oil, coconut aminos and seasoning, then I drizzled lemon juice on top. The kale salad was made with lacinato kale, garden tomatoes, hemp seeds, olives, and raw pickles.
More protein! Another snack I made: gluten free millet bread with raw almond butter, raisins and bee pollen. I've been snacking on raisins a lot for iron, got to store up for childbirth!
What is everyone doing this weekend? I have a graduation party to go to on Saturday and I hope to check out a new vegan restaurant (with many raw options) down at the shore. Finally, my favorite news this week: next Wednesday I am going to an Ani Phyo lecture!!! It's about 20 minutes from me in NJ, my mother in law and I already bought tickets! There will be a book signing at the end, I hope to get a few pictures with her as well. I will have a full blog post on it next week! Can't wait! Have a great one!

I understand your frustrations with the Larabar situation, but I think in order to keep their bars in the price range they are (which I still find INCREDIBLY expensive), they'd have to up the price to probably $2-$2.50 per bar if they used, say, Enjoy Chocolate Chips. To me, "may contain milk" has always meant that there is no milk in the actual chocolate chips, but that they are processed on equipment that is shared with milk-containing products. Example: when I make chocolate chip cookies, I use Ghiardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips. There is no milkfat in the ingredient list, but since it is processed on shared equipment, there is the possibility that there may be cross-contamination. If I am making these for my vegan friends, they find them to be suitable. If I am making them for someone who has a severe dairy allergy, I would splurge and buy the Enjoy chocolate chips.

I agree with Heather. As long as the actual recipe has no dairy and as long as you're not allergic to dairy, I think it's okay. And it would be prohibitively expensive if they used Enjoy Life (which has refined sugar, anyway--another thing that Larabars really shouldn't contain!).

Thanks for sharing the Larabar info. When they say "may contain milk" and the ingredients don't list it than I'm okay with it. They just need to write that because of those with allergies.

I think you are doing great on the protein thing cuz I had a girlfriend who couldn't hardly keep anything down, food wise, for 2 of her pregnancies and both babies were perfectly healthy!

I've used those coconut aminos too!

Annoyed still that Larabar can't get any chocolate chips that are vegan. Oh well, I just use larabars as more of a once in awhile snack since it's so much easier to make my own bittbars. ;-) Thanks for the update.

Good luck on the protein front. I love ants on a log! getting a huge craving now that I saw that pic.

Thanks for posting the response from Larabar, it does explain things a bit. I think it is good to let companies know when we have concerns about their products.

All your eats look incredible , as usual. I've never tried tempeh, but it looks so good!

Have fun this weekend, and at the upcoming Ani Phyo lecture :)

Oooh Ani Phyo -- you're so luck! Have an amazing time.

I generally understand the "may contain" phrase to be a disclaimer for legal reasons, for instance, in case of a serious allergic reaction. So it doesn't bother me excessively and I'll still buy products that have that phrase on the label. But at the same time, it's stupid that a company like Larabar -- which is obviously beloved by vegans -- can't just get its act together to ensure its chips are 100% free from any potential contact with dairy. But I didn't realize General Mills now owns Larabar so I'll probably quit buying them in the future anyway. Big food = bad news!

Thanks for sharing that information about larabars, but since I do not really like them to begin with I am not worrying haha LOL. I understand where they are coming from though..legally ;)

Have fun at Ani's event!! She is awesome!!

Thanks for the larabar update! It's what I expected so as long as I'll prob eat the ones labelled "may contain milk" too.

Loving almond butter at the moment. In fact, peanut butter has now being relegated to 2nd after all those years it was at 1st. I'm also loving tempeh right now! I knew it was easier on my stomach than tofu but didn't realise it was because it's fermented! Thanks :)

And very exciting about Ani's lecture. She's giving a cookery class in NYC when we're visiting at end of August so I'm hoping I can persuade the hubby to let me include it in our trip...

Hope you have a wonderful weekend xxx

Thanks for the clarity, girl!

I tend to not freak out about the idea of cross contamination. If I see egg or milk or casein or whey anywhere in a food, of course, it's out, but the idea that something may have accidentally touched something with milk is less immediately disturbing to me.

With this said, I don't LOVE it, and I'm happy to stick to the Larabar flavors I already know and love. Still, I want to try carrot cake!

Yummy meals as always :)

Thanks for posting the LB info. Interesting and not sure how I feel about it yet, but as always, it's a matter of perspective. If I'm in a pinch I'm sure I'll feel better buying a LB instead of something less healthy.

Secret baby name.. love the suspense!

Ani Phyo... so jealous!!! Can hardly wait to hear about it :)

I don't hesitate to buy products that "may contain milk" because it's usually referring to the equipment it's processed on. Though I'd rather there not be this issue at all and it just be 100% vegan, factories process many products for various companies. I'm glad they do mark packages as they do for those with life-threatening allergies.

Mmmm ants on a log and tempeh! YUM!

I love Larabars, but I definitely loved them more before they were bought out. The label changes haven't really changed the recipes per se, but the product itself is being processed on a larger scale, which means a higher chance on contamination. At least if it does get a bit of milk product in it, it won't be much, probably minuscule. This probably doesn't matter to people without allergies.

Wow - thanks for posting the Lara Bar stuff! You are such a good detective!

I have not thought about ants on a log in forever! Now I want some! Celery is so expensive here - almost a dollar PER STALK! Plus, there is no organic...hmph.

It is so exciting that you are going to get to go to Ani's event!
